Do you often find yourself excitedly setting up a new planner, only to abandon it shortly after? Despite our best intentions, many of us struggle to maintain consistent planning habits, feeling overwhelmed and unproductive as a result.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Like many others, I’ve found myself accumulating planners throughout the years, yet often failing to fill them out beyond a few months. It’s a common frustration shared by those of us who desire organization but struggle to maintain it. Despite my plan to plan, I struggled to keep up with my planner, leaving me feeling overwhelmed and unproductive after having no structure throughout my days. I’ve come to realize I’m not alone in this struggle; there are countless others out there who, like me, are chronically online and can empathize with the frustration of planning despite having a strong desire to do so.

I still want to have a planner and make good use of it, but I believe there’s a solution that goes beyond just another attempt at making the perfect planner and abiding by it. In this article, we’ll explore the power of intention setting for cultivating a sense of direction and achieving meaningful goals, offering a solution that goes beyond traditional planning methods. We will talk about how this differs from and will complement planning, and while we are at it, let’s explore the depth and nuances of intention setting, unraveling its potential to shape our lives in profound ways.

I want to be transparent that simply wanting to improve wasn’t enough to actually take the steps necessary when I was in the depths of depression, anxiety, and the other complexities of my mental health. I’ve taken a significant step forward in my journey by embracing the support of therapy. Opening the door to this form of assistance marks a pivotal moment for me as I began to prioritize my mental and emotional well-being. Through therapy, I’ve acknowledged that I don’t have to face my struggles alone and have recognized the value of seeking professional guidance and support. I’m happy to say I’ve been realizing that I can achieve my goals and I can enjoy my life, and I wouldn’t be here without having accepted the help that I needed. There is hope, and I strongly encourage anyone that relates to the struggles I discuss on my page to reflect and decide if seeking help might be the missing puzzle piece to you living a fulfilling and balanced life.

What Is It and Why Practice Intention Setting

For me, intention setting offers a refreshing alternative to the rigidity of traditional planning methods. It is a transformative practice centered on clarifying and directing your aspirations. By setting clear, positive intentions and regularly reaffirming them, intention setting cultivates mindfulness, prioritizes goals, and fosters purpose in life. Intention setting is about being authentic with ourselves regarding our goals, emotions, and actions, and understanding how they coordinate with our desired outcomes. Intention setting embraces flexibility and spontaneity, qualities that resonate with my mindset, while fostering mindfulness and self-awareness.

My journey into intention setting began when I acknowledged my desire and need for a routine. Earlier this year, I was constantly overwhelmed and felt behind in every area of my life. I began questioning my capabilities, and recently, I realized I wasn’t using them at all for self-improvement. This left me feeling defeated with little energy to participate in anything. The lack of any structure in my life truly made it hard in an already tough struggle with depression. As I floated through life carelessly and resigned, I let my chaotic “routine” take over and hold the reins. It was a bumpy ride!

The lack of clear intentions left me feeling obligated rather than purposeful, resulting in late nights, neglected self-care, and a sense of disarray in my thoughts and actions. I know very well just how this lack of direction leads to a chaotic lifestyle, my interests only ever a distracting thought crossing my mind (maybe a couple of quickly scribbled sentences on a lost journal page) the to-do list a fleeting hope, and hardly anything to show for the day. The lack of organization hindered my productivity and creativity, and left me dissatisfied. Reflecting on each day, I dwelled on what went wrong and how to rectify it, feeling unfulfilled.

I recognize the importance of balancing my time between enjoyable distractions and the pursuit of improving habits and sticking to a routine, and, despite finding joy in setting up my planner, I couldn’t help but feel there was more to achieving my goals. As I delved into Atomic Habits, I began to introspectively examine my decision-making process, aiming to uncover the motivations driving my actions. I contemplated why I desired certain behaviors, such as enhancing my performance at work, dedicating time to my website and hobbies, and engaging in outdoor activities. Despite my efforts to organize these aspirations within a planner, a lingering sense of incompleteness persisted.

During this introspection, I found myself drawn to the overarching concept of intentions, which I had heard of before but hadn’t delved into deeply. Without realizing it, I began to engage in honest reflection on this topic. Let’s explore how we can harness the benefits of planning while alleviating some of its burdens.

How is Intention Setting different than Planning?

  • Focus on Action vs. Focus on Mindset: Planning typically revolves around creating detailed action steps, deadlines, and milestones to achieve specific outcomes. In contrast, intention setting focuses more on cultivating the right mindset and aligning internal thoughts and emotions with desired outcomes.
  • Rigidity vs. Flexibility: Planning often entails a structured and rigid approach, with predefined schedules and tasks. On the other hand, intention setting allows for more flexibility and adaptability, accommodating unexpected changes and opportunities that may arise along the way.
  • External vs. Internal Alignment: Planning primarily deals with external alignment, ensuring that actions are in line with predefined goals and objectives. In contrast, intention setting emphasizes internal alignment, ensuring that thoughts, emotions, and actions are in sync with one’s core values, purpose, and aspirations.

As I’ve mentioned, intention setting and planning play complementary roles in achieving goals, with intention setting offering a deeper, more holistic approach by mirroring internal states with external actions. While effective, planning can also induce stress and pressure. You see, I am simply not one that can easily follow the path I should take, as the alluring nature of being alive and exploring my interests easily derails my color-coded, time-blocked calendar. Really, the former wins to the obligatory schedule I said I’d stick to almost every time, as the need to do the things I plan for end up standing in opposition of my current state of mind. This creates the stress, and the stress creates a brick wall between me and the goals I broke down in my planner.

While I am continuously working on routine-building, positive talk (“I deserve this job opportunity, I can do this, this opportunity allows me to grow my house fund”), and discipline in order to control the urge to veer off the course whenever intriguing ideas occur, I believe intention setting will tie my efforts together in a way that will help in achieving my goals which I now know are attainable. You can do anything you set your mind to. Never doubt yourself, simply enrich your day-to-day with positive intentions and work on the system in which you thrive.

How To Do It

Here’s a step-by-step guide to intention setting:

Reflect on Your Values and Priorities: Take time to ponder what truly matters and what you prioritize in life.

Reflecting on your values and priorities might involve considering what brings you the most joy and fulfillment in life. For example, you might ponder whether spending quality time with loved ones, pursuing personal growth, or making a positive impact in your community harmonizes with your core values and priorities

Choose a Focus: Identify an area of your life to set intentions, be it career, relationships, extracurriculars, personal growth, or health.

Choosing a focus allows you to direct your energy and attention to specific areas of your life that you wish to improve or prioritize. This focused approach enhances clarity and effectiveness in intention setting, helping you make meaningful progress toward your goals.

Be Specific: Formulate intentions with clarity and avoid vague statements.

Being specific in intention setting helps you get clear on what you want, making it easier to stay focused as you work in the direction of your goals.

Use Positive Language: Frame intentions positively, focusing on what you want to attract.

Using positive language in intention setting shifts your focus to what you want to achieve, bolstering determination and belief in success. It reinforces optimism and commitment, enhancing the likelihood of reaching your goals.

Visualize Your Desired Outcome: Imagine yourself experiencing the outcomes of your intentions.

It’s like painting a mental picture of where you want to be, which can motivate you to take the necessary steps to get there. Plus, seeing yourself succeed in your mind’s eye can boost your confidence and determination along the way.

Write Down Your Intentions: Reinforce commitment by putting intentions into writing.

Jotting down your intentions in clear terms helps keep things on track by giving you a solid reference point. It’s like putting your goals on paper and saying, “Yep, that’s what I’m aiming for!”

Review Regularly: Make a habit of reviewing intentions daily to stay focused.

Checking back on your intentions reminds you of what you’re aiming for, making it more likely you’ll take steps that move you closer to your goals.

Align Actions with Intentions: Ensure your behavior reflects your desired outcomes.

If you want to be a business owner, seek advice from successful business owners. Read books, listen to podcasts about entrepreneurship, and place yourself in communities of like-minded individuals who will positively influence, motivate, and encourage you.

Stay Open to Opportunities: Be receptive to unexpected opportunities along the way.

If you find yourself approaching new opportunities with fear and anxiety, practice positive self talk and reframe the way you think about them.

Examples of positive self-talk: “I deserve this promotion,” “I have practiced and honed my skills, and this affirms my efforts,” or “I am creative and my perspective and works of art are unique and desired.”

Practice Gratitude: Cultivate gratitude for accomplishments and future endeavors.

Practicing gratitude in intention setting helps cultivate a positive mindset, boosts morale, and reinforces a sense of fulfillment.

Consider asking yourself what excites you about the upcoming week, what activities or commitments match with your values and bring you joy, and how you can prioritize time for them. Reflect on what actions will cultivate satisfaction and fulfillment in different areas of your life, and identify small, manageable tasks that contribute to your overall well-being. This tailored approach is particularly beneficial for individuals who, like myself, find traditional planners overwhelming or stress-inducing. By embracing intention setting in this way, you can alleviate unnecessary stress and foster a more mindful and purposeful approach to your days and weeks ahead.

As you embark on your intention-setting journey, it’s essential to recognize that this process is not about perfection but about progress. Embrace the journey with patience and self-compassion, understanding that meaningful change takes time. Be gentle with yourself as you navigate the ups and downs of aligning your actions with your intentions. Remember that each step forward, no matter how small, is a step toward a more intentional and fulfilling life.

Furthermore, as you delve deeper into intention setting, allow yourself to stay open to the unexpected. While setting intentions provides a framework for guiding your actions, it’s essential to remain flexible and adaptable to the twists and turns of life. Embrace the journey with curiosity and a sense of adventure, trusting that each experience, whether planned or unplanned, has something valuable to teach you.

As you witness the power of intention setting, consider sharing it with others. Invite friends, family, or colleagues to join your journey of purposeful living. Together, you can amplify the impact and inspire a more intentional approach to life. In navigating intention setting, may you find clarity and fulfillment. Remember, it’s about deeper connection and aligning actions with desires. Embrace these insights and tools with enthusiasm, knowing each moment brings you closer to joy. Thanks for joining me on this exploration. Let’s continue embracing possibilities for positive change, one intention at a time.
