Do you ever find yourself stuck in a loop of wanting to do everything but ending up doing nothing? Feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of hobbies and interests you want to pursue, yet struggling to make progress on any of them? Maybe you have ADHD, or you might just be multi-passionate, and find yourself relating to this. If so, you’re not alone. Many of us grapple with the challenge of balancing our desire to engage in creative endeavors with the realities of daily life and mental health struggles.

In this article, geared towards individuals who yearn to embrace their creative passions but find themselves hindered by procrastination, perfectionism, or other mental roadblocks, we’ll explore practical strategies to overcome these hurdles. Drawing from personal experience and research-backed insights, we’ll delve into the art of planning, the power of self-compassion, and the journey of embracing imperfection. Together, we’ll navigate the twists and turns of the creative process, armed with tools to reclaim our passion and build a life filled with purpose and joy.

Before we delve into it, I’d like to briefly touch on a wonderful point made by Creator and Life Coach Caren Magill about the importance of discernment.

From a young age, we often feel society pulling us in various directions, expecting us to excel and surpass the norm. Unfortunately, we often miss out on a valuable lesson shared by Magill: the ability to discern between standards that stem from our genuine passions and desires, and those imposed by obligation or the dreaded ‘should’ statements (a word that therapy tends to despise). Practiced discernment breeds authenticity, and to start, you can follow the steps laid out by Magill:

  1. Create a list of areas in your life where you’ve been struggling and want to improve.
  2. Write down every action you’ve been taking in each area of struggle.
  3. Circle the actions you’re taking out of pure interest or feel aligned with.
  4. Only measure yourself based on the actions you feel authentic about and are most interested in doing.
  5. Stop measuring yourself based on the actions you did not circle, which are ultimately the “should be doing” obligations we’ve been attempting to conform to.

Engaging in discernment between actions born from genuine passion versus those driven by external expectations fosters a deeper connection with our authentic selves, enhancing self-awareness and enabling us to effectively navigate our myriad interests with clarity and purpose. I wanted to start with this so you can approach this article with clarity and without any pressure. Thank you, Caren!

Overcoming the Hurdles to Creative Fulfillment

For me, the roadblocks to enjoying my hobbies were multifaceted. From feeling pulled in too many directions to grappling with perfectionism and the impacts of ADHD, each obstacle seemed to stand between me and the joy of creative expression. But through introspection and trial and error, I’ve discovered strategies to overcome these challenges and reclaim my passion for artistry. However, it’s essential to note that this journey is ongoing, and I continue to work on these challenges daily; the process of overcoming them requires constant discernment and adjustment.

Identifying the Obstacles: Recognizing the patterns that hinder our creative expression often requires introspection and self-awareness. One helpful tip is to keep a journal or log of your thoughts and actions, noting recurring behaviors or triggers that inhibit your artistic pursuits. Additionally, practicing mindfulness can help bring attention to these patterns as they arise in real-time, allowing for more immediate intervention.

When making time for your creative self, approaching your artistic endeavors with a mindset of curiosity and experimentation can be empowering. Rather than viewing obstacles as insurmountable barriers, see them as opportunities to explore different ways of engaging with your creativity. Breaking down creative projects into smaller, more manageable steps and setting aside dedicated time for self-expression can help prioritize your artistic fulfillment. Remember, progress in creativity is not always linear, and setbacks are a natural part of the creative process. By embracing each challenge as an opportunity for artistic growth and self-discovery, you can cultivate a deeper connection with your creative self and nurture your passion for artistic expression.

Finding Balance Through Setting Intentions

One strategy that has proven invaluable in my own journey is the power of setting intentions. Instead of rigid planning, I approach my week with the intention of incorporating my hobbies into my schedule. Whether it’s loosely jotting down my desired creative pursuits for the week in a physical planner or a digital platform like Notion, setting these intentions allows me to create space for creativity amidst the chaos of daily life.

Think of it as a gentle reminder to make time for your creative endeavors throughout the month. By setting intentions, you give yourself permission to explore your passions without the pressure of rigid scheduling.

One helpful tip is to keep your intentions flexible and adaptable. Allow yourself the freedom to adjust your plans as needed based on your energy levels and interests. If you find yourself drawn to a different hobby or activity on a particular day, embrace the spontaneity and go with the flow. Remember, the goal is not perfection but rather the joy of engaging in activities that bring you fulfillment.

At the end of the month, you’ll likely find yourself feeling happier and more fulfilled knowing that you’ve made time for your passions. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the multitude of things you want to do, you’ll have taken meaningful steps towards nurturing your creative spirit. Trust that there is time for your passions, and by setting intentions, you can make space for them in your life.

Embracing Imperfection and Iteration

Central to overcoming perfectionism is the practice of embracing imperfection and allowing ourselves the freedom to create without fear of failure. Instead of viewing mistakes as failures, see them as opportunities for growth and learning. Each mistake adds unique character to your work and contributes to your journey as an artist.

One helpful tip is to shift your perspective on mistakes. Rather than seeing them as flaws to be corrected, view them as valuable lessons and sources of inspiration. Embrace the beauty of imperfection and recognize that it is often the quirks and imperfections in our work that make it truly unique and authentic.

Over time, you’ll come to appreciate the progress you’ve made and the journey you’ve embarked on. As author John Maxwell fittingly puts it, “fail early, fail often, but always fail forward.” Each mistake is a stepping stone towards improvement, and each iteration brings you closer to realizing your artistic vision. Celebrate the evolution of your work and take pride in the journey of growth and exploration.

Cultivating Self-Compassion and Awareness

Above all, it’s essential to prioritize our mental health and self-care as we navigate the ups and downs of our creative journey. Neglecting our well-being can intrude on our ability to fully engage with our hobbies and creative endeavors. When we’re feeling overwhelmed or drained, it’s important to acknowledge our struggles with honesty and kindness.

One way to support our mental well-being is by practicing self-compassion. This means giving ourselves permission to take breaks, set boundaries, and prioritize activities that nourish our passions. By recognizing that we need time to feed our creative energy in order to thrive in all areas of life, we can prevent burnout and maintain a sustainable balance.

Seeking support from trusted friends or mentors can also be invaluable. Having an accountability partner who knows us well and can provide honest and kind encouragement can help us stay grounded and motivated, even when we may not realize we need it. By surrounding ourselves with a supportive network, we can navigate the challenges of our creative journey with resilience and perseverance, knowing that progress is a journey, not a destination.

When we adopt these practices, we often find it less daunting or stressful to take the time to enjoy our creative side and express ourselves. Recognizing when we are succumbing to self-doubt and approaching tasks with discernment, considering whether they align with our passions, fosters a productive sense of creativity and expression. Creativity serves as a vital outlet for humans, allowing us to connect with ourselves and the world around us in meaningful ways.

In the end, the path to creative fulfillment is as unique as the individuals who tread it. Yet, by embracing our struggles with patience and perseverance, we can unlock the boundless potential within us and rediscover the joy of artistic expression. So, to anyone who feels trapped in the cycle of indecision and inaction, know that you’re not alone. By prioritizing self-compassion and setting intentions to pursue what brings us joy, we empower ourselves to embrace our creative passions fully. Remember, your creativity is a valuable outlet for self-expression and growth.

Thank you for joining me on this journey of self-discovery and creative exploration. I encourage you to continue nurturing your passions and finding joy in your creative pursuits.
